WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR HEADSHOT SESSION
Why Your Headshot Matters
Getting the right look for your headshot is crucial. It not only shows people who you are, but also how you want to be perceived. In my opinion, it’s even more important than a CV initially, as it forms the first impression potential employers or clients will have of you. Your headshot sets the tone for how others see you, influencing their decision to engage with you further. It's a key element of your personal brand.
Many potential employers or clients will search your name online to gather background information. Old and current headshots will appear, so it's essential to have a good one out there. Follow my advice below to ensure you get the perfect shot.
Preparing for Your Headshot Session
Preparation is vital for a great headshot. Many people have their headshots arranged for them and often rely on the photographer to work their magic. However, there’s only so much a photographer can do. As a London headshot photographer, I can create flattering lighting, use high-quality lenses, choose a good background, and enhance your photo in post-processing. Still, without knowing you well or having ample time to talk and take test shots, it’s challenging to capture how you want to be portrayed. Typically, I get only a few minutes per person, which is not enough to explore all the options. By that time, it's too late to change outfits or appearance.
Thinking about how you'd like to be photographed well before the shoot can make a huge difference in getting a headshot you'll love and use for years, versus one you won’t be proud of.
What to Wear
Choose an outfit that not only presents you well but also feels comfortable. Do you want to look businesslike or relaxed and casual? Consider who will view your headshot and how you’d like them to perceive you. Do you want to stand out or blend in?
Ensure your clothes are clean and freshly pressed if that's the look you’re after. Avoid stripes and patterns as they tend to draw the eye. Similarly, avoid white shirts or tops unless worn under a jacket, as the eye is drawn to the lightest part of the photo. Mid-tones usually work best. If you have a color that suits you well, wear it, as long as it’s not white. Think about a flattering neckline and avoid bare arms. While you can make a statement with jewelry, tattoos, and colorful outfits, consider how you’ll feel about your headshot in the future. The internet has a long memory!
Other Considerations for Your Headshot
Makeup
While I can arrange a makeup artist, results can be mixed unless a trial is done beforehand. Doing your makeup yourself ensures you look the way you expect.
Hair
For men, a clean shave if desired is a good idea, and avoid haircuts or coloring within a week before the shoot.
Glasses
Decide whether to wear glasses for the headshot. If you choose not to, or if you want a mix of shots with and without them, take your glasses off shortly before the shoot to avoid marks from the nose pads.
How You Want to Come Across
Feel free to discuss with me how you want to be portrayed in your headshot. It’s helpful to think about this in advance and perhaps talk it over with a partner or friend. Consider your best side, your usual selfie angle, and whether you prefer smiling or a more enigmatic look.
Last-Minute Tips
Before your headshot, check your appearance in a mirror for makeup, hair, and straight clothes. Take some deep breaths and stretch a bit to relax, as tension can show in your posture. If you’re not wearing glasses for the headshot, or mixing shots with and without them, remove them to avoid marks.
Conclusion
Most people feel nervous about headshots, which is understandable. This often stems from fear of the unknown or concerns about looking silly. Rest assured, none of these things will happen during a shoot with me. I strive to make you comfortable, discuss your preferences, and quickly get the shots you need. Though taking your headshot typically only takes a few minutes, it may take longer if you want to try different looks.
